BACKGROUND

These promotion events are included in a larger community initiative for promoting sustainable rural development in the Mountain of Leon area. Cidecot is conveying all stakeholders in order to promote a strategic and action plan around a shared vision for future in this area: “Being a Socio-Economic Development factor in Leon”.
In order to reach this shared vision, community members and key stakeholders have identified several action lines and goals. Among them, building a high-quality and sustainable tourism arises as one of those key goals. Among those specified in the tourism action line, some emerged as main objectives:

I. Identification of types of tourism which would be valuable for the area:

  • Nature (walking, mushrooms, plants, animals, ornithological, geological)
  • Health (water and spas)
  • Cultural (food, museums, archaeological, historical)
  • Traditional (music, art, pottery)
  • Foreign Language tourism

II. Creation of a global product that encompasses several types of tourism – to encourage people to visit and enjoy a number of tourism activities within the Mountain region.

  • Creation of a ‘Mountains of Leon’ product brand, which will appeal to the national and international markets.
  • Reestablish interest in forgotten routes and historic roads for tourists.
  • Creation of a website to encompass all tourism activities and services in the region.

In order to reach those two main objectives for developing a sustainable and quality tourism, Cidecot is working in collaboration with “Montaña de Riaño” Local Action Group, Alto Bernesga Foundation, local councils and municipalities, business, associations, and citizens in an online TV program: Mountain of Leon ¡Alive!
